Virus hits NC strawberry crops

There will be 4% drop in strawberry crops coming out of North Carolina this year after several farmers were sold virus-infected plants from two nurseries in Nova Scotia, WLOS reports.
The viruses stunt the plants’ growth and reduce the number of berries they produce. The berries, however, are safe to eat according to the report.
Strawberry expert Barclay Poling estimates that 12 percent of the state’s 1,600 acres in strawberry production will be affected. The state is expected to produce about 27.6 million berries this year.
